PROGRAM:  CE marking, often described as the "European Passport" for products traded in the European Union (EU), is a mandatory legal requirement for most machinery, electric and electronic products, pressure equipment, medical devices, equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres, and toys sold or put into service in Europe.  The EU continues to expand and by 2007 will comprise a market of 30 countries with more than 450 million people.  CE marking is more important than ever for U.S. exporters.

CE marking, which covers product safety and environmental concerns, was developed to reduce technical barriers to trade within the EU.  Before the CE marking system, manufacturers had to comply with multiple, and often inconsistent, national systems of product requirements and standards.  Now, once products comply with CE marking, they may be freely sold to and within all participating countries.  CE marking a product implies the use of European harmonized standards, and for certain product categories involves ISO 9000 certification.  CE marking rules for medical devices involve additional quality assurance requirements such as ISO 13485.

PRESENTER:  Gonzalo Manchego, Manager - International Standards and Technical Regulations,  Center for International Regulatory Assistance (CITRA), part of  Duquesne Small Business Development Center.

CITRA is a not-for-profit program provided by Duquesne University to help companies obtain the European CE Mark.
